Vbeam

A laser for rosacea and redness
that goes after the small vessels behind them.

What Is
Vbeam?

Vbeam is a pulsed dye laser for rosacea, facial redness, flushing and broken capillaries. Its light is absorbed by the red pigment in your blood, so it treats the small, widened vessels behind the redness while a cooling system protects the surface of your skin. It is our main tool for a red face, and Dr. Idriss has had it herself for her own rosacea.

Who It’s For

Redness that starts in the blood vessels.

Ideal For

Rosacea redness and flushing, background redness across the cheeks and nose, broken capillaries and small spider veins on the face, cherry angiomas and other red spots, red scars and new red stretch marks. Vbeam treats the redness. If you also have the bumps of rosacea, a prescription routine comes first. See the concerns we treat.

When to Wait

Laser treatments are safest with limited sun exposure, so timing is discussed at your visit, and darker skin tones need extra care to avoid dark marks. Not everything red is rosacea. If your redness comes from an overloaded skincare routine, the fix is usually fewer products.

Vbeam or IPL?

Vbeam is a laser tuned to one target, blood, which makes it precise for redness and broken capillaries. IPL spreads its light over many wavelengths, which makes it less specific and usually means more sessions, but it can treat a little of everything, brown spots included, in one session. For rosacea and a red face we usually reach for Vbeam. Compare Vbeam and IPL for rosacea and redness, or all our lasers and devices.

“Red skin is not always rosacea. I want to know what is behind your redness before we plan a series, because the routine around the laser matters too.”

The Treatment

1

What Is Behind
the Red

Treatment starts with a diagnosis, because not everything red is rosacea. Your doctor works out what is behind your redness and sets up the skincare and, if needed, prescription routine that has to come first.

2

A Series of
Sessions

The laser passes over the whole face, because the background redness between the visible vessels needs treating too. A cooling system protects your skin with each pulse.

3

Once a Year
to Maintain

Redness and flushing settle over a series of about three to five sessions. Because vessels can come back, the result is kept with maintenance treatments, about once a year.

Beneath the Surface

How Vbeam treats redness, in four stepsA cross section of skin with a widened blood vessel just below the surface and a magnified circle on the vessel showing the blood inside it. Step 1: the small vessel near the surface has widened, and the blood in it shows through the skin as redness. Step 2: the laser handpiece comes to the skin and a cooling system protects the surface of the skin with each pulse. Step 3: the laser's light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the blood in the vessel, shown in yellow; it turns to heat, which collapses the vessel, while the skin around it is left intact. Step 4: the treated vessel shrinks and the redness fades over a series of about three to five sessions; rosacea is not cured, so a maintenance treatment about once a year keeps the skin calm.

Step 1 of 4: Widened vessels

Rosacea and broken capillaries come from small blood vessels near the surface that have widened. The blood in them shows through your skin as redness.

Step 2 of 4: The surface is protected

A cooling system protects the surface of your skin with each pulse, so the top layer stays safe while the laser works beneath it.

Step 3 of 4: The light finds the blood

The laser’s light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the red pigment in the blood. It turns to heat and collapses the vessel, while the skin around it is left intact.

Step 4 of 4: Calmer skin, then maintain

The treated vessels shrink and the redness fades over a series of about three to five sessions. Rosacea is not cured, so a maintenance treatment about once a year keeps it calm.

Often paired with: Customized Care, Botox and Ultherapy.

“A laser in office is like going for a teeth cleaning once a year without you brushing your teeth on a daily basis.”
