Ultherapy

Focused ultrasound, set to the depth your face needs,
lifts loosening skin without surgery or downtime.

What Is
Ultherapy?

Ultherapy (Ulthera) is a focused ultrasound treatment that lifts and firms loosening skin without breaking the surface. The energy reaches precise depths beneath the skin and prompts it to build new collagen, and the lift builds over the following months. Your doctor sees the layers beneath the skin on screen while treating, so the energy goes to the right depth for your face.

Who It’s For

Skin that has started to loosen on a face that still has its volume.

Ideal For

A face that still has its volume but is starting to sag: a heavier brow and loose skin under the chin and on the neck. Ultherapy is FDA cleared to lift the brow and the skin under the chin and on the neck, and to improve fine lines on the chest. Our doctors treat the full face with the area under the chin, the lower face and neck, and the brow and eyes, and, less often, the arms, knees and abdomen. See our lasers and devices.

When to Wait

Ultherapy is not used over open wounds, severe or cystic acne, or a pacemaker, defibrillator or metal implant in the treatment area, so tell your doctor about any implant or filler. It can be used on all skin tones. If you need a result for an event in the next few weeks, it is the wrong tool: the lift builds over two to three months.

What it cannot do

Ultherapy lifts and firms. It does not replace lost volume or relax the muscles that make expression lines. Hollows respond to filler or collagen building injectables, and lines from movement to Botox. If your skin is thinning or crepey rather than sagging, radiofrequency microneedling such as Morpheus8 or Secret RF may suit you better. For very loose skin, surgery may be the honest answer. Compare Ultherapy, Morpheus8 and SecretRF for skin tightening.

“Ultherapy suits a face that still has its volume but has started to loosen. If your skin is thinning, or you need a result in weeks, I will tell you it is the wrong tool.”

The Treatment

1

Where It Has
Loosened

Your doctor assesses where your skin has loosened, agrees with you which areas to treat, and decides whether Ultherapy is the right tool at all.

2

Energy at
the Right Depth

Using the ultrasound image on screen, your doctor places focused energy at set depths beneath the skin. A session takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on the areas, and you can go straight back to your day.

3

A Lift That
Builds

New collagen forms over the following months. The lift develops over two to three months and can last a year or more, while your face keeps aging around it.

Beneath the Surface

How Ultherapy lifts the skin, in four stepsA cross section of skin: the surface, the dermis, a layer of fat and a deeper supporting layer, sloping downward where the skin has loosened, with a magnified circle on the deeper layers. Step 1: the layers light up one by one, from the surface down to the deeper supporting tissue where Ultherapy works. Step 2: a smooth applicator rests on the skin and shows the layers as an ultrasound image, a pale fan beneath it and a darker screen view in the circle, with a gold line marking the treatment depth. Step 3: the applicator glides across the skin and focused ultrasound converges into rows of tiny gold points of heat at two set depths, while the surface stays unbroken. Step 4: the applicator lifts away, over two to three months the points become new collagen, the slack fibres straighten and the layers rise above a dotted line marking where they sat before.

Step 1 of 4: Beneath the surface

Under the skin you see lie the dermis, a layer of fat and deeper supporting tissue. Ultherapy works in these deeper layers, without breaking the surface.

Step 2 of 4: Seeing before treating

Your doctor rests a smooth applicator on the skin and sees the layers beneath it on screen as an ultrasound image, so the energy goes to the right depth for your face.

Step 3 of 4: Focused heat at set depths

Focused ultrasound comes together into tiny points of heat at set depths beneath the skin, while the surface stays intact. You may feel deep heat or tingling for a moment with each pulse.

Step 4 of 4: A lift that builds

Your skin responds by building new collagen, which lifts and firms over two to three months. Results can last a year or more.

“Nobody’s ever walked out from the procedure, so it can’t be that painful. And I usually do it every two years or so on myself.”
