Profractional Laser

Deep resurfacing for acne scars and texture,
usually the last step in a longer plan.

What Is
Profractional?

Profractional is an ablative fractional erbium laser, made by Sciton, for acne scars, deep texture and lines. It removes narrow columns of skin across a fraction of the treated area, with very little heat spread, so the skin heals with new collagen while the skin between the columns speeds recovery. Its depth can be set from 25 to 1,500 microns (Sciton).

Who It’s For

Textured acne scars and deeper lines, on the face and also the neck, chest and hands.

Ideal For

Depressed acne scars (boxcar, rolling and ice pick scars), deep texture, wrinkles and fine lines, on the face and also the neck, chest and hands. Scars usually need a combination: subcision and filler to lift the base of a scar first, microneedling, and resurfacing last to smooth the surface. See all our lasers and devices.

When to Wait

Get active acne under control first. With melasma, heat based lasers are avoided. In darker skin tones we are cautious with ablative lasers and may choose a non-ablative laser or microneedling instead. Resurfacing is not for young skin without real texture to treat.

Profractional, CO2 or Fraxel?

Profractional and CO2 are both ablative: they remove the surface in tiny columns. Profractional uses an erbium laser with very little heat spread. CO2 is the more aggressive option, which we use mostly around the eyes. Fraxel Dual is non-ablative, keeps the surface intact and has less downtime.

“Boxcar, rolling and ice pick scars each behave differently, so I map yours first. Resurfacing usually comes last, once the base of a deep scar has been lifted.”

The Treatment

1

Map Your
Scars

A plan starts by naming your scar types. Red or brown marks are treated first, then the base of deeper scars is lifted with subcision or filler, before any resurfacing.

2

Resurface
in Columns

The erbium laser removes narrow columns of skin to the depth your scars need, leaving the skin between them intact to speed healing. Settings stay conservative if you tend to get dark marks.

3

Months of
Remodeling

Let the skin heal without peeling or rubbing, protect it from sun and heat, and keep it moisturized. Collagen remodels over three to six months, and the effect builds with each treatment in the plan.

Often paired with: Microneedling, Dermal Fillers and Fraxel Dual.

“It’s a marathon and not a race. Do not expect a one-hit wonder with any treatment.”

I highly recommend Dr. Fisher. I followed her from her previous practice and I continue to be happy with my results. I’ve gotten fillers and laser. Whenever I’ve wanted to do more, she was always honest with me. If I didn’t need it, I could count on her to tell me
